LAPAROSCOPIC SLING SURGERY

Stress incontinence is treated with urethral sling surgery. A sling is wrapped around the urethra to support it and aid in urine retention. The urethra is the tube that transports urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. There are various kinds of urethral sling surgeries. Slings are classified into two types: mid-urethral and traditional. Synthetic mesh material is used to make mid-urethral slings. Slings are traditionally made from a strip of human or animal tissue. You might fall asleep during surgery. If you are awake, you will be given medication to help you relax and prevent pain. The doctor makes small cuts (incisions) in the vagina and lower belly or upper thigh to perform the surgery. The doctor will then thread a strip of mesh tape or tissue through the incisions and under your urethra, similar to a sling or hammock. The incisions are then stitched shut. You may be able to leave the hospital on the same day as your surgery. You could also spend the night in the hospital. You should be able to return to work in 1 to 2 weeks. However, you will need to rest for at least 6 weeks before returning to all normal activities. During this time, you should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities.
