Urethral sling surgery is used to treat stress incontinence. To support the urethra and aid in urine retention, a sling is wrapped around it. The urethra is a tube that connects the bladder to the outside of the body. There are several types of urethral sling surgeries. There are two types of slings: mid-urethral and traditional. Mid-urethral slings are made of synthetic mesh material. Traditionally, slings are made from a strip of human or animal tissue. You might nod off during surgery. If you are awake, medication will be administered to help you relax and avoid pain. To perform the surgery, the doctor makes small cuts (incisions) in the vagina and lower belly or upper thigh. The doctor will then thread a strip of mesh tape or tissue, similar to a sling or hammock, through the incisions and under your urethra. The incisions are then closed with stitches. You might be able to leave the hospital on the same day as your operation. You could also stay in the hospital overnight. In 1 to 2 weeks, you should be able to return to work. You must, however, rest for at least 6 weeks before returning to all normal activities. Heavy lifting and strenuous activities should be avoided during this time.
